Romania recorded the highest annual inflation rate in the last 20 years

Romania recorded, in November, a record annual inflation rate of almost 17%, the highest in the last 20 years. It is above the forecast for the end of the year, of 16.3%, announced by the governor of the National Bank, Mugur Isărescu, Radio România Actualități reports.

The biggest price increases were recorded for food. This is almost 22% more expensive than in November 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics. The price of sugar increased the most, by almost 62%.

Other foods that have seen increases of more than 40% are butter and oil. Electricity has almost doubled in the last year, and gas prices have risen by almost 38%.

Increases of around 20 percent were also for thermal energy and fuels. By the same amount, air and rail transport, as well as water, sewage and sanitation services, have become more expensive. The only decrease was registered, in the last year, for telephone services, which decreased by about 1%.
