President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu spoke out after Border Police detected the presence of two drones in Moldova's southern region.

“We must admit that we lack the necessary capabilities to defend ourselves against them. It is profoundly serious that this is happening, and just as serious that some politicians are betraying the country, claiming that we should not be able to defend ourselves, that Moldova must remain weak and vulnerable in the face of such threats. We will continue to strengthen partnerships with European countries and modernize our National Army, so that one day we will be a state that fully ensures the security of its citizens. True neutrality means being able to defend ourselves from the bombs of an aggressor state that reaches our territory,” President Maia Sandu wrote on her Facebook page.

“These drones, which landed on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, were launched by the Russian Federation. They are drones that, for almost three years, have been killing innocent people daily in neighboring Ukraine. We strongly condemn Russia’s massive airstrikes on Ukraine and the violation of the Republic of Moldova’s airspace,” noted Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.

Last night, following a massive drone attack on the port of Reni in Ukraine, several drones crossed the airspace of the Republic of Moldova. The Border Police detected the presence of drones near the village of Ciumai in the Taraclia district, and another exploded in a field located between the town of Ceadîr-Lunga and the village of Valea Perjei.

In this context, Oleg Ozerov, the Russian Federation's ambassador to Chișinău, will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova to receive a formal protest note.
