Trump administration policy: US warns Moldova on dangers of uncontrolled migration

The United States (US) has issued a US warning to the Moldovan authorities regarding the significant risks associated with illegal migration and the import of cheap labor, cautioning that these factors could threaten to fundamentally alter the nation's national structure.

Nick Pietrowicz, the US Chargé d'Affaires in Chișinău, stated on the Moldova 1 show "Diplomatic Dimension" that the American experience should serve as a wake-up call for "a small and vulnerable country" like Moldova.

"In recent decades, the United States has actively struggled with illegal migration, stemming from individuals who have either entered the country illegally or overstayed their permitted visa duration," Pietrowicz explained.

The American diplomat emphasized that the Washington administration treats the issue as a national priority, consistent with the Trump administration policy focused on border security. "President Trump is determined to secure our borders. Our Government is making sustained efforts to identify, locate, and send these individuals back to their countries of origin," he confirmed.

Pietrowicz also drew attention to the parallel, destructive phenomenon in Moldova: the massive departure of its citizens, widely known as the "brain drain."

"Moldovans know the 'brain drain' phenomenon very well—how many talented and brilliant Moldovans have left the country and the toll this has taken," he said. He added that this reality should make Moldovan society acutely vigilant against the risks of uncontrolled migration flowing in the opposite direction.

In contrast to Moldova's human capital losses, Pietrowicz explained that the United States faces internal, systemic pressures caused by illegal migration. "What you have not suffered is what we have seen in the United States, where people enter our country, work illegally, break laws, and modify the national structure," he affirmed.

The US official stated that his recommendation is based on hard-won lessons learned by the USA. "We do not want to tell people here how to run their country. We want to help, provided your Government has a request. But I strongly suggest that Moldovans be cautious about the dangers of migration," Pietrowicz advised.

His message specifically targeted the import of workers from outside the country. "We urge you to be cautious about the temptation to bring in cheap labor, and especially illegal labor. Moldova is a small country. It is extremely vulnerable to this type of change," concluded the US Chargé d'Affaires.

Trump Policy on Migration Impacts Moldovan Nationals

The US promotes a strict migration control policy, applied by the Trump administration policy in its second presidential term, which began in January 2025. Washington has adopted a series of restrictive measures aimed at significantly reducing migratory flows, strengthening border security, and re-evaluating existing immigration statuses.

Key actions include the acceleration of deportation procedures, extended verification of legal statuses, additional entry restrictions for specific categories of foreign nationals, and more rigorous controls on temporary visas and permanent residence applications.

These policies directly impact Moldovan nationals residing in the United States. Approximately 300 Moldovan citizens were recently listed for potential deportation. Furthermore, Moldova is among 19 countries for which American authorities have initiated an extensive review of permanent residency documents.
