Deadly An-22 crash in Russia's Ivanovo region claims seven lives

A Russian military transport aircraft, an Antonov An-22, crashed in the Ivanovo region of the Russian Federation on the morning of December 9, killing all seven crew members aboard. Preliminary reports indicate there were no survivors from the An-22 crash.

The aircraft went down in the Furmanovo district, in the northwest of the Ivanovo region in Central Russia. Initial reports suggested the plane had fallen into the Uvod River, but emergency services later confirmed the crash site was in the Uvod Reservoir area, with aircraft fragments visible on the water's surface.

Rescue and emergency teams are actively working at the site. The aircraft's last contact with the control tower was reported around 11:00 AM, local time.

The Antonov An-22 is a large heavy transport aircraft powered by four turboprop engines. It holds the distinction of being the world's first wide-body aircraft and the largest in its class. Its primary role is the long-distance transportation of heavy and bulky armament, military equipment, and airborne troops.

Designed in the 1960s, the An-22 was serially produced between 1966 and 1976. This timeline suggests the crashed military plane could have been up to 49 years old, immediately raising concerns about the aircraft's age as a potential factor in the deadly incident.
