Igor Munteanu steps down from CUB leadership three years after he founded the party

After three years, Igor Munteanu steps down from the leadership of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare (CUB) in the Republic of Moldova to return to some academic projects that he says he has neglected lately. Victor Tarna will serve as interim president.

In a Facebook message, Igor Munteanu notes that he enjoyed an unforgettable experience while he led CUB and thanks everyone who stood by him as friends and colleagues in good times and hard times.
While he serves as interim president, Victor Tarna must maintain the unity, balance, and coherence the party needs until the next congress.
This decision is final and received approval from the Standing Bureau and the National Political Council on 11 December, Igor Munteanu adds.
Igor Munteanu, former ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the United States, university teacher, and former member of Parliament from the DA Platform, announced the creation of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare party on 1 November 2022 and became its president after the founding congress on 5 November.
At its launch, Igor Munteanu stated that it formed a liberal, centre-right, pro European political party committed to helping the Republic of Moldova join the European Union by 2030.
In the parliamentary elections of 28 September 2025, CUB received 13.314 votes, or 0.84 percent of the total, below the 5 percent threshold needed to enter the Legislature.
