Maia Sandu meets with Volodymyr Zelensky in The Hague: 'The Republic of Moldova supports all efforts for a dignified, lasting peace'

The main topics discussed during the meeting between Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova, and Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, on December 16 in The Hague, included the security situation in the region, developments in Ukraine, efforts to achieve lasting peace, and the European integration of both countries. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the Diplomatic Conference to establish the International Claims Commission for Ukraine.

According to a message posted on Facebook, the head of state announced that the discussions centered on Ukraine's resistance to Russian aggression.

"We talked about the situation at the front, Ukraine's remarkable resilience, and international efforts to bring peace to both Ukraine and the entire European continent," wrote Maia Sandu.

The president reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova's support for international initiatives aimed at ending the war.

"The Republic of Moldova supports all efforts to achieve a dignified and lasting peace," emphasized the head of state.

Another important topic of the meeting was the accession of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union. Maia Sandu stated that European integration is vital for strengthening regional security and stability.

"Membership in the EU will anchor Moldova in a space of peace and stability and will enhance the security of Ukraine," the president said.

Maia Sandu also reiterated Chisinau's commitment to working closely with international partners to build a common European future for both countries and the region.

"We remain dedicated to collaborating with our partners for a peaceful, secure, and European future for Moldova, Ukraine, and the entire region," concluded the head of state.

President Maia Sandu will participate in the Diplomatic Conference for the Establishment of the International Complaints Commission for Ukraine on December 16. This conference will take place in The Hague, Netherlands, under the auspices of the Council of Europe (CoE). Notably, the Republic of Moldova will assume the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the CoE from November 2025 to May 2026.

During the conference, President Sandu will open the proceedings alongside Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset. Her agenda also includes meetings with Prime Minister Schoof and the presidents of both chambers of the Dutch parliament. Additionally, she will engage in discussions with international relations experts at the Clingendael Institute.

The International Claims Commission for Ukraine is an international mechanism established under the Council of Europe to review and resolve claims for compensation arising from damages caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine. This Commission represents a significant step in establishing the Register of Damages for Ukraine, which was agreed upon by heads of state and government at the Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavík. To date, 44 states and the European Union have joined the Register, which has already received over 80,000 claims.

The new Commission will have the authority to examine, assess, and resolve claims submitted to the Register, and to determine the appropriate compensation for each case.
