CEC proposes permanent postal voting to bridge gap with diaspora

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova has officially proposed the introduction of a dedicated "Mail-in Voting" chapter within the nation's Electoral Code.

The recommendation follows the approval of a comprehensive report on December 22, evaluating the partial implementation of postal voting during the parliamentary elections held on September 28, 2025.

Expanding democratic access

Electoral authorities emphasize that maintaining this alternative method is vital for facilitating the participation of Moldovan citizens living abroad.

During the September elections, the pilot program expanded significantly, growing from six to ten participating countries.

Eligible citizens in the United States, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand were able to cast their ballots via mail.

Analyzing the pilot results

A total of 1,894 voters utilized this alternative method. The CEC is now prepared to present these findings before the Moldovan Parliament in Chișinău.

All logistical challenges and strategic outcomes will be further analyzed during a post-electoral conference. This event is scheduled for February 19–20, 2026.

The move signals Moldova's commitment to modernizing its electoral framework and ensuring a more inclusive voting process for its global diaspora.
