Talks with India on work rights for diplomats’ dependents

The Government of the Republic of Moldova has begun negotiations with Indian authorities to permit family members of diplomats to work legally in India. This applies to individuals who are dependents of staff members at diplomatic missions and consular offices.

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, who also serves as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced at the Executive meeting on March 18 that a new agreement will be based on the principle of reciprocity. This agreement will allow family members of diplomatic personnel to legally work in the host country.

According to Popșoi, the project will not incur additional expenses. "On the contrary, once adopted, it will help us save on allowances granted to dependents who are seconded," the Deputy Prime Minister stated.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that such treaties not only guarantee the right to work as provided by national legislation, but also contribute to the protection of diplomatic families.

The Republic of Moldova already has similar agreements with countries including Romania, Ukraine, the United States, France, Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands, with ongoing negotiations with Spain.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of India were established on March 20, 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in New Delhi was inaugurated on December 16, 2024.
