Strategic connectivity: Moldova integrates into EU transport corridors via new Prut bridges

Romania and Moldova are accelerating the integration of their road networks, marking a historic shift toward European infrastructure standards. Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, Secretary of State at the Romanian Ministry of Transport, confirmed that the first new bridge at Ungheni is on track for completion this year.

The project includes the first 5.5-kilometer motorway segment on Moldovan territory. This section will link the country directly to the high-speed Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), effectively bridging a decade-long infrastructure gap through strategic bilateral cooperation.

Expanding cross-border capacity

In addition to the Ungheni link, authorities have finalized plans for four additional bridges over the Prut River. This includes a major four-lane bridge at the Albița–Leușeni border crossing, designed to streamline heavy transit and reduce current bottlenecks at the frontier.

"Our target is for every Moldovan district along the Prut to have at least one functional road bridge," Scrioșteanu stated. Funding is being secured through a combination of European Union grants and the Romanian state budget.

Securing pre-accession funding

The Romanian official urged Moldovan authorities to fast-track the "maturation" of technical projects. Drawing from Romania's past experiences, he warned that a lack of shovel-ready projects could lead to the loss of vital EU pre-accession funds.

Strategic project readiness is essential for Moldova to capitalize on its emerging role as a regional logistics hub. As the conflict in neighboring Ukraine continues, these improved road links are expected to transform current "Solidarity Lanes" into permanent corridors for the country's post-war reconstruction.

Economic and European integration

The development of high-speed infrastructure is viewed as a prerequisite for Moldova's EU membership path. By connecting to European transport corridors, the country aims to attract significant foreign investment and ensure the efficient movement of goods across its borders.
