Government will invest 63 million lei in repairing National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History

The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Chișinău will be restored. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea, stated on Friday, March 20, in a Facebook Live, that the Government will invest 63 million lei in the renovation of this emblematic building of the country.

The contract was signed last week. The museum will be equipped with two multipurpose halls, five new exhibition spaces, and specialized restoration workshops.

“We are creating conditions for the scientists who work on restoring various items discovered during archaeological excavations or who ensure the maintenance of museum exhibits. We are creating workshops worthy of their status, so they can work in very good conditions, to help us better understand history, preserve all the treasures we have, and enrich ourselves spiritually when we visit these museums,” said Vladimir Bolea.

After the completion of the works, the museum will have over 1,800 square meters of modernized spaces for exhibitions, as well as educational activities. Founded in 1889, the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History is an important cultural and scientific center dedicated to nature and local traditions. It is located on Mihail Kogălniceanu Street in Chișinău and houses a collection of over 100,000 items, including exhibits of flora and fauna, fossils, and ethnographic objects such as folk costumes and traditional tools.

The first building in this museum complex was constructed between 1854 and 1856 and hosted the Orphanage for Children in Chișinău. The building was later transferred to the Zemstvo of Bessarabia, where the Agricultural Museum of the gubernial administration was created, which subsequently formed the basis of the current museum.

Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea also referred to another project carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.

“Recently, in Cahul, I took part in the signing of the contract for the execution of works for the town’s theater. The residents are eagerly waiting to have access to this building, and the financial resources provided by the Government of Romania have made it possible to build the theater from scratch. It is the first theater built in the Republic of Moldova after 1991, completely new,” the official said.

According to Bolea, the works will be completed within the next 12 months, and the city of Cahul, considered “the capital of the south of the Republic of Moldova,” will benefit from a modern space for performances and cultural events. “It is a beautiful theater, where performances will be held for citizens,” the minister added.
