Vladimir Plahotniuc gets another 30 days of preventive arrest

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office has announced that the preventive arrest of Vladimir Plahotniuc has been extended by another 30 days, following a decision by the Chișinău Court, Buiucani office. The court hearings in the case are scheduled to begin on March 23, at 10:00 a.m.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office has announced that the preventive arrest of Vladimir Plahotniuc has been extended by another 30 days, following a decision by the Chișinău Court based in Buiucani. The court hearings in the case are scheduled to begin on March 23, at 10:00 a.m.

According to a press release from the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, “the Chișinău Court based in Buiucani, fully upheld the prosecutor’s request to extend by another 30 days the preventive measure – the arrest applied to Vladimir Plahotniuc.” The release also states that on March 19, “the Chișinău Court, Ciocana office, upheld all three motions submitted by prosecutors to extend the preventive arrest of Vladimir Plahotniuc in the criminal cases that are still at the investigation stage.”

Vladimir Plahotniuc is under investigation in several criminal cases, including the 2014–2015 banking fraud case, in which he is accused of creating and leading a criminal organization, large-scale fraud, and money laundering. This case is already pending before the court.

Plahotniuc is also being investigated in a case opened in 2026 concerning the forging, possession, and use of false identity documents, as well as in other, older cases involving accusations of influence peddling. The former Democratic Party leader was detained in Greece on July 22, 2025, pursuant to an Interpol warrant issued by the Moldovan authorities, and extradited to Chișinău on September 25, 2025. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Plahotniuc is currently being held in a separate cell at Penitentiary No. 13 in Chișinău. He does not plead guilty in all the cases in which he is targeted.
