President Sandu calls urgent security meeting on border crime

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has convened a meeting of the Supreme Security Council (SSC) today, March 23, at 11:00 AM. The President’s Office announced the session early Monday morning.
The official agenda focuses on measures to tackle cross-border crime and prevent emerging security risks. President Sandu is expected to hold a press conference immediately following the meeting.
Focus on resilience
This session follows a comprehensive resilience plan approved by the SSC in December 2025. That document targeted vulnerabilities in information security, cyber defence, and the illegal funding of electoral processes.
At the time, Sandu stated the plan responded directly to the "urgent needs of strengthening state security."
Geopolitical context
Moldovan authorities have frequently warned of complex hybrid threats originating from the Russian Federation. These threats include cyber pressure, disinformation, and economic coercion.
Security risks have intensified due to the war in neighbouring Ukraine and the presence of Russian troops in the breakaway Transnistria region. Recently, Russian drones used in attacks on Ukraine have breached Moldovan airspace several times.
Officials view these incursions as part of a broader pattern of hybrid actions intended to destabilize the country.
