President Nicușor Dan outlines roadmap for Chisinau’s EU path at The Economist Summit

Romania’s journey from economic disparity to regional stability stands as a definitive success story, and Bucharest is now pivoting to replicate this trajectory for the Republic of Moldova.
Speaking at the inauguration of The Economist Romania Government Roundtable at the Romanian Athenaeum, President Nicușor Dan emphasized that the future of the two nations lies in synchronized markets and infrastructure. The summit, running until April 1, brings together NATO officials, EU diplomats, and Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu.
Economic convergence as a benchmark
President Dan highlighted the developmental leap Romania achieved since the year 2000, when its income levels were only 26% of the EU average. By 2024, this figure surged to 78%, providing a concrete blueprint for Moldova’s own integration.
"Our goal is to erase historical gaps," the President stated. Romania’s current strategic priorities, including OECD accession and Eurozone readiness, are now being leveraged to pull Moldova into a shared orbit of prosperity.
From symbolic support to market synergy
Foreign policy expert Daniel Vodă (IPRE) noted that the President's message marks a transition from "symbolic diplomacy" to "structural synergy." The focus has officially moved toward tangible interconnection between energy grids, financial markets, and capital flow.
"We are no longer discussing mere political solidarity," Vodă commented. "The emphasis on economic integration indicates a new phase of joint infrastructure projects and cross-border investments that will redefine the Prut river as a bridge, not a border."
A stable regional priority
Under the current administration, Moldova has evolved from a circumstantial topic into a stable national priority. The strategy involves accelerating high-impact energy projects and stimulating both private and state-owned investment.
For Chisinau, this shift ensures that its European path is backed by Romania's institutional strength, creating a unified economic front in the face of current geopolitical challenges in Eastern Europe.
