Serbian special forces thwart potential sabotage of critical gas infrastructure

Serbian security forces have discovered explosive devices near the Balkan Stream gas pipeline during a large-scale operation in the Kanjiža region. The intervention followed intelligence reports regarding a direct threat to critical energy infrastructure in the area.

The operation involved over 130 personnel from the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior. Units included the 72nd Special Operations Brigade, criminal police, and military police, supported by canine teams and helicopters.
Discovery of explosive devices
President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed the findings during a public statement. He reported that authorities discovered two backpacks and two large packages containing explosives and detonators near the village of Velebit.
The location is situated just a few hundred meters from the strategic gas pipeline, also known as TurkStream or South Stream. Serbian authorities have since blocked roads between nearby villages to ensure public safety.

Diplomatic and security response
Vučić stated that he discussed the situation via telephone with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The Serbian President emphasized that security at all vital energy sites will be significantly reinforced across the country.
"We will act without mercy against anyone who dares to threaten our vital infrastructure," Vučić warned. Official details regarding the origin of the explosives remain classified as the forensic investigation continues.
