Quality over quantity: Moldovan bottled wine exports drive record value growth

Despite severe climatic challenges in 2025, Moldova’s wine industry has reported a landmark year. The national grape harvest surged by 35% compared to the previous year, with exports to the European Union now accounting for 60% of total volume.
During the 10th National Wine Conference held this Wednesday, industry leaders emphasized a strategic pivot toward premiumization. While bottled wines represent only 40% of export volume, they generated an impressive 62% of the sector's total export value in 2025.
Small producers reach global milestones
Elena Tomescu, Administrator of the Small Wine Producers Association, highlighted that her members achieved a five-year high in performance. Despite overlapping energy and fuel crises, small-scale winemakers surpassed €925,000 (approx. 18.2 million MDL) export threshold.
While Romania remains the primary destination, small producers successfully penetrated high-barrier markets including the United States and China. This diversification reflects a growing international appetite for Moldovan terroir and indigenous grape varieties.
Strategic modernization and international acclaim
Stefan Iamandi, Director of the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV), noted that current performance indicators remain 23% above the ten-year historical average. The rising price per bottle signals a successful transition to high-value production.
"Our strength lies in our ability to adapt to global trends and climate change," Iamandi stated. He emphasized that the state’s proactive support and the promotion of new local varieties are crucial for maintaining this upward trajectory.
A global wine capital
The year 2025 also cemented Moldova’s reputation on the world stage. Moldovan wineries secured approximately 800 awards across 26 international competitions.
Furthermore, hosting the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine significantly boosted the nation's visibility, positioning Moldova as a sophisticated, sustainable, and competitive player in the global wine economy.
