End of interim leadership: Machidon secures mandate for Moldova's top prosecutor role

The Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) has unanimously approved the evaluation report for Acting Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon. This decision marks the successful completion of his vetting process, granting him full statutory authority to lead the Prosecutor General's Office.
Unanimous support for integrity
During the session held on April 16, ten members of the CSP voted in favor of the findings issued by the Evaluation Commission on March 24, 2026. The Council confirmed that Machidon meets all legal criteria and possesses the professional integrity required for the nation's highest prosecutorial office.
The decision can be challenged at the Supreme Court of Justice within 15 days. If no appeals are filed, administrative procedures will commence to finalize his permanent appointment, and the document will be published on the official CSP website.
A competitive mandate
Alexandru Machidon secured his leadership position after winning a CSP-organized competition on August 19, 2025. He earned a score of 8.86 points, surpassing Victor Furtuna, the then-interim head of the specialized anti-organized crime unit (PCCOCS), who scored 8.23.
His appointment ends a period of interim leadership that began in May 2025, following a decree by President Maia Sandu. Machidon took the helm after the previous incumbent, Ion Munteanu, transitioned to a judicial role at the Supreme Court.
Fifteen years of prosecutorial expertise
Machidon’s career in the justice system began in 2008. Over the past 15 years, he has held key positions across various districts and specialized units, including a significant tenure at the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office between 2020 and 2021.
His extensive background includes serving as the interim chief of the Orhei District Prosecutor's Office and a high-ranking role at PCCOCS. This progression through the ranks has been highlighted as a cornerstone of his professional readiness for the permanent mandate.
