Vertical integration in agriculture: Moldovan entrepreneur returns home to modernize the family estate

After nine years of academic and professional experience in Italy, Denis Pruteanu has returned to his hometown of Vadul-Rascov, Soldanesti. His objective is to transform a traditional family sheep and goat farm into a modern, vertically integrated enterprise.

Pruteanu manages the business with a strategic "field-to-shelf" vision. This model encompasses the entire production cycle, from cultivating 56 hectares of grain to livestock rearing and, ultimately, processing meat for retail distribution.

Optimizing operational efficiency

The farm currently hosts 50 sheep and 30 goats, including a high-performance flock of Dorper sheep. This specific breed was selected for its rapid growth—reaching slaughter weight in under five months—and its self-shedding traits, which significantly reduce labor costs and maintenance time.

The entrepreneur emphasizes that the Dorper breed offers superior meat quality while remaining resilient to local environmental conditions. By focusing on low-maintenance, high-yield breeds, the business optimizes its resource management and ensures long-term sustainability.

Strategic investment and fiscal advantages

Pruteanu’s decision to return was driven by the comparative fiscal advantages found in Moldova compared to the high tax burdens in the EU. He chose to leverage his international management expertise to elevate the family business to institutional standards.

To facilitate this growth, the farm secured €18,700 (approx. 366,000 MDL) grant through an EU-funded program implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). These funds were utilized to automate grain processing, ventilation, and feeding systems.

Future expansion into dairy

While the current operations focus on meat production, the enterprise is preparing for its next phase of expansion. Pruteanu plans to diversify the brand’s portfolio by launching a premium range of finished dairy products, further consolidating the farm's position in the national market.
