Ministry of Foreign Affairs appoints Dumitru Socolan as Secretary General, with over 30 years’ experience

Dumitru Socolan, the former ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Japan, has been appointed as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Dumitru Socolan was recently recalled from Japan following a government decision on March 25, which was proposed by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

With over three decades of experience in the diplomatic service of the Republic of Moldova, Socolan has held numerous leadership and representation positions throughout his career.

He served as the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Japan starting in November 2021, and since July 2023, he has also held the position of Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, based in Tokyo.

Prior to this, he served as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MAEIE) from November 2019 to August 2021, when he assumed leadership of the diplomatic mission in Japan.

Socolan has also served as the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Portugal and to the Kingdom of Morocco, with residence in Lisbon, from 2016 to 2019.

Earlier in his career, he held leadership positions in international law and treaties and held various mandates in the consular service, including at the Consulate General of the Republic of Moldova in Frankfurt am Main.
