Two streets and a green area renovated in Coșnița with EU support
European investments are being made on both banks of the Nistru River through six infrastructure projects under the “Confidence Building Measures” Programme. This initiative is financed by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In Coșnița, two streets have been redeveloped to include safe sidewalks and a green space for the local community. Additionally, nearly 130 trees have been planted along the roads leading to the Nistru River.

Since the spring of 2024, the commune of Coșnița, along with 11 other communities on both banks of the Nistru, has been involved in a process to establish development priorities. The community members chose to focus on infrastructure, and after two years, they believe it was the right decision.
"Without a doubt, there have been many changes. When you look around, you can see something new and well-done, beautifully constructed."
"It's definitely better to walk on the sidewalk, as cars and bicycles are meant to drive on the road. It just feels more natural to walk on the sidewalk."
"I believe it's a benefit that Europe wants to invest in our country as well. I'm very happy about this, and I hope there will be more investments like this. It will especially make children happy to see our roads being repaired."

The European Union has allocated over $100,000 to implement this project. Additionally, the Coșnita commune mayor's office and local residents contributed another $17,500. This funding was used to purchase 126 trees from three varieties: Canadian cercis, maple, and catalpa.
"This project not only involved the construction of sidewalks but also their improvement in the local areas. Ramps were created for individuals with disabilities and for parents with strollers. Previously, there was no access, making it difficult for mothers. We also installed two electronic notice boards," said Alexandru Grigoraș, the mayor of Coșnita.
The European Union and UNDP continue to support initiatives aimed at improving cooperation between communities on both banks of the Nistru.
“We have been supporting these confidence-building initiatives between the two banks of the Nistru for 15 years, making this just one of the many projects we are implementing. We focus on small infrastructure projects, support businesses on both banks of the Nistru, and facilitate communication between civil society organizations,” stated Julda Kielyte, a representative of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova.
The European Union’s Confidence-Building Measures Programme, launched in 2023, will conclude at the end of the year and has a budget of nearly $5.4 million.
