OSCE and Switzerland reaffirm support for the Republic of Moldova and Transnistrian settlement

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Switzerland reaffirmed their commitment to provide diplomatic support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and the peaceful resolution of the Transnistrian conflict. This was stated on May 14 in Chisinau by OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioğlu and Ignazio Cassis, the Vice President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

During a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held alongside the 135th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Chișinău, both parties emphasized the importance of high-level discussions regarding the reintegration of the Republic of Moldova and the promotion of peace throughout Europe.

The OSCE reiterated its commitment to supporting regional security and stability in the Republic of Moldova, especially amid the threat that the Ukraine-Russia war could expand.

“This war is causing suffering to people in several regions of Europe and continues to impact the Republic of Moldova, particularly affecting its security, economy, and energy situation. I commend the resilience of the Republic of Moldova in addressing these challenges and its ongoing commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the Transnistrian region,” stated OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioğlu at a joint press conference with Ignazio Cassis and Mihai Popșoi.

The official also acknowledged the “1+1” discussion format and the working group on economic issues as significant steps toward the comprehensive and peaceful resolution of the Transnistrian conflict.

“Our mission collaborates with both sides and facilitates cooperation on the ground. In times of uncertainty, dialogue serves as a stabilizing force. The OSCE is prepared to remain engaged in the Republic of Moldova to support dialogue and security,” concluded Feridun Sinirlioğlu.

Switzerland: A reliable partner for the Republic of Moldova

The resolution of the Transnistrian conflict is also on the agenda of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. Ignazio Cassis announced today that he will visit Bender (Tighina) for the first time to help improve dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol.

"Switzerland has consistently supported the OSCE mission in resolving the Transnistrian conflict. This visit will be an excellent opportunity to reaffirm this support and encourage dialogue between the parties to settle the conflict by the Nistru," stated Ignazio Cassis.

According to the Swiss official, resolving this conflict is part of a broader effort to enhance the EU's ability to promote peace on the continent and strengthen the authority of European diplomacy.

"Switzerland, Moldova, and all European Union countries are engaged in an important process of restoring global influence, stability, and a stronger defense capacity in Europe. Switzerland commits to remaining a dependable partner for the Republic of Moldova, and we will continue to support its journey toward a stable and prosperous future in Europe," declared the Vice President of the Swiss Confederation.

Mihai Popșoi: “We seek a peaceful and political solution to the Transnistrian issue”

“We believe that the OSCE, as an international platform, can and must engage in diplomatic dialogue to revitalize risk reduction mechanisms, arms control, and transparency. These elements are essential for reestablishing European security. Our efforts should also focus on restoring trust and fostering constructive dialogue to manage conflicts in the region,” stated Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi during a recent press conference.

The minister also praised the OSCE mission's active involvement in supporting a peaceful resolution to the Transnistrian conflict.

“The OSCE’s presence, monitoring capabilities, and mediation role remain crucial for stability and confidence-building. We desire a peaceful and political settlement of the Transnistrian issue, fully respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. It is vital that the reintegration process is based on common rules, legal certainty, and consistent treatment,” added Mihai Popșoi.

The official believes that the Republic of Moldova’s progress towards European integration will positively impact the reintegration process, especially since Russian military forces and ammunition stocks remain illegally stationed on Moldovan territory.

“The resolution of the conflict must involve the Russian Federation's commitment to international obligations. This, without a doubt, will create a positive dynamic for the reintegration process of the Republic of Moldova,” concluded Mihai Popșoi.

On May 14-15, Chisinau hosts the 135th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. This event brings together participants from over 50 delegations representing member states of the Council of Europe, as well as observer states. The session will mark the conclusion of the Republic of Moldova's presidency of the Committee of Ministers and the transition of leadership to the Kingdom of Monaco.

The Republic of Moldova began its presidency on November 14, 2022, in Strasbourg. During its tenure, a key focus was on combating disinformation and foreign interference.
