Birth rates in the country are declining, while women are becoming mothers later in life

The number of children being born in the Republic of Moldova is declining, and women are becoming mothers at older ages. In 2025, approximately 22,100 children were born, about 1,500 fewer than in the previous year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The data indicate that most births occur among women aged 25 to 34.

There is a noticeable difference between urban and rural areas: in urban areas, there were 500 fewer births than in rural areas.

According to the statistics, women in villages typically have their first child at an average age of 24, while in cities, this average age is 28.

At the district level, the youngest mothers at their first birth were found in Cantemir, Glodeni, and Ștefan Vodă. In contrast, the municipality of Chișinău has the highest average age at first birth for mothers, exceeding 29.5 years.

We remind you that the data does not include information from the territory on the left bank of the Nistru or the municipality of Bender.
