New Bassarabian inventors' Alley unveiled in Costești

A treasure trove of Bassarabian intelligence was gathered in one place. In the village of Costești, Ialoveni district, the “Alley of Bassarabian inventors” was inaugurated. This project is dedicated to the most enlightened minds who have significantly impacted science, medicine, and education worldwide. One hundred remarkable individuals, including world-renowned researchers and elite doctors, are honored along this alley. The event also saw the attendance of several of the scientists recognized in the project, whose achievements have transcended the borders of our country.

Among those honored is the renowned cardiovascular surgeon Grigore Tinică. He graduated from Medicine in Chisinau and he was among the first Bassarabians to earn a doctorate in Bucharest. Having become a key figure in Romanian medicine, the surgeon claims to have introduced several innovative methods in surgery. Now, his team is working on developing an artificial heart, a project that has won awards in both the United States and Japan.

"We established the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, George I.M. Georgescu, in Iași, along with the first Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic in the city. Our goal was to be the pioneers in performing surgical interventions with the best possible outcomes. In the first 154 surgical procedures, we experienced no deaths. Moreover, out of the first thousand cardiovascular surgical interventions performed in Romania, there was only one instance of wound infection," stated Grigore Tinică.

Oleg Lupan, a university professor and PhD at the Technical University of Moldova, is also recognised for his contributions to the field. He is among the scientists whose work is highly cited and serves as a benchmark in international laboratories.

"The most notable innovations are in the field of nanosensors, making this achievement unique both in the Republic of Moldova and globally. There are very few scientists capable of such advancements, as they require extreme sophistication and innovation. The potential applications are significant", said university professor Oleg Lupan.

The event brought together dozens of local residents and relatives of those honored in the golden book of inventors. Attendees remarked that this alley serves as a source of national pride.

"We remember all the Bassarabians who have made contributions to various scientific fields through their discoveries. They dedicated their lives to improving the quality of life in this country."

"This alley represents the treasure of the Republic of Moldova and is a point of pride for the Costești locality. I have a son on this list, Adrian Vlas," a local resident shared.

"This initiative is very valuable because it helps us connect with our past, present, and future. It benefits our community and, hopefully, will attract many tourists to visit this alley."

Among the personalities honored along the alley are writer Adrian Păunescu, actor and director Emil Loteanu, and academician Sergiu Rădăuțanu, the founding rector of the Technical University. The project's initiators plan to expand the alley in the future to include other prominent figures from the nation.

"It serves as a tourist attraction with both economic and social significance for our society. I should note that this project is unique in the Republic of Moldova, and we hope to welcome as many visitors as possible. Initially, we plan to honor 100 individuals. We hope to secure funding to expand the alley to include 300 to 400 names," said Ilie Ionaș, former mayor of Costești.

The total cost of the project was 700,000 lei. Funding was provided by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova, local authorities, and the diaspora from the village of Costești.
