Moldova increases its gas reserves by 6.3 million cubic meters for the 2026–2027 winter season

Moldova’s natural gas security stocks will increase by 6.3 million cubic meters for the 2026–2027 cold season. The decision was announced on Tuesday, 2 June, by the Ministry of Energy, following the completion of public consultations.
The project plans to raise gas stocks from 50 million to 56.3 million cubic meters. Energocom will build up the new volume by 1 October 2026.
Moldova has no domestic gas storage capacity. It currently holds its entire strategic reserve, equal to about 10 days of winter consumption, in storage facilities in Romania, Ukraine, and other EU and Energy Community countries.
The ministry cites higher consumption during the 2025–2026 winter as the reason for the increase. Authorities use strategic reserves only in exceptional situations. Last winter, they deployed them nearly in full to cover peak demand.
The Energy Community Secretariat recommends that countries without storage infrastructure keep reserves in neighboring states at a level of at least 15 percent of national consumption. In its latest report, it also cites Moldova as a good-practice example in this area.
