Moldova clears former stadium site for new US embassy

The land plot on Tighina Street in Chisinau, designated for the construction of the new United States Embassy, has been completely cleared. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced the completion of this phase on Wednesday, June 3, ahead of the government cabinet meeting.

Strategic partnership and urban renewal

The head of the executive stated that authorities have fulfilled all obligations for this stage of the project. The initiative includes building the new American diplomatic mission and developing a public park on the site.

"The Republic of Moldova has finalized the land clearing stage and has fulfilled all its assumed obligations for this stage of the project regarding the construction of the new headquarters of the Embassy of the United States of America, as well as a park, while preserving the emblematic gates of the stadium. I believe it is important for us to preserve the historical appearance," the Prime Minister stated.

According to Munteanu, the project marks an important step toward strengthening the strategic partnership between Moldova and the United States. Procedural steps outlined in the bilateral agreement will follow as local authorities maintain close contact with the US Embassy and the American government.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the investment will drive modernization across the historic district, echoing similar developments in other Eastern European capitals.

"I saw a transformation of the entire neighborhood, especially in Kyiv and Bucharest. In Pipera, for example, when the new headquarters of the US Embassy was built, international schools, shopping centers, and modern infrastructure appeared. I believe there will also be a beautiful development of this historic neighborhood in the city of Chisinau," Alexandru Munteanu said.

Historical background and financial details

The project preserves the iconic gates of the former Republican Stadium, which was demolished in 2007 under Communist rule and left as an urban wasteland in the city center.

The United States purchased the former stadium site in 2024 from the Moldovan government for €18 million (approx. 352.8 million MDL). In February 2025, the construction works were officially declared a public utility of national interest, prompting property expropriation and owner compensation.

US authorities previously announced plans to invest approximately $250 million into the zone, which will include parks and open spaces accessible to the general public. Bilateral negotiations for the land originally began in 2008, followed by a first official request in 2015 and an initial agreement signed in July 2019.
