Over 2,240 Moldovan farmers apply for urgent fuel tax relief

More than 2,240 farmers have applied for diesel excise tax compensations through the Agency for Agricultural Intervention and Payments (AIPA). The government allocated €5.61 million (approx. 110 million MDL) to fund this support mechanism following applications submitted between May 11 and June 2, 2026.
The financial aid covers fuel purchased between March 1 and May 31, 2026. Eligible beneficiaries include local agricultural producers and public research institutions in the agricultural sector.
Regional distribution
Regional data shows the Bălți Territorial Directorate received the highest volume with 372 applications, followed by Edineț with 337. Conversely, Ungheni registered the lowest demand with only 142 requests.
Other regional filings include Cahul with 242 requests, Orhei with 232, Florești with 198, and Chișinău with 193. The autonomous region of Gagauzia filed 186 applications, followed closely by Hâncești with 179 and Căușeni with 163.
Economic context
The estimated diesel demand for spring cultivation stands at roughly 50,000 tons. Fuel represents up to 16% of expenses for field crops and up to 30% for technical and vegetable crops.
Authorities noted that Middle East geopolitical tensions drove domestic diesel prices up by over nine lei per liter. This surge added severe financial pressure on Moldova's 3,200 producers, who were already impacted by consecutive natural disasters.
In 2025, the country's agricultural sector received 92.86 million EUR in financial support via AIPA. Those funds subsidized the infrastructure and operations of 8,653 local producers.
