Russian drone strikes target Ukraine energy grid and Black Sea ships
On the night of Sunday, June 7, Russian forces launched a massive wave of 236 attack drones across Ukraine, killing at least three civilians and wounding dozens. Ukraine's Air Force intercepted 215 of the unmanned aerial vehicles, while local authorities reported direct strikes in 13 locations and debris impact in nine other regions.
In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, an FPV drone strike killed a 56-year-old minibus driver at a terminal station in the Kushuhum suburb. Regional Military Administration Head Ivan Fedorov confirmed the broader assault wounded 25 people and triggered widespread grid failures.
Fedorov noted that utility teams deployment was immediate, though he withheld the identity of the targeted industrial facility. "Energy teams are already working to reconnect consumers," Fedorov wrote.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian forces launched over 20 drone and guided bomb attacks across two districts during the night. Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Head Serhiy Lysak confirmed the strikes killed a 59-year-old man and left another civilian wounded.
Meanwhile, heavy artillery and air strikes in the Sumy region targeted 46 separate settlements. Local police reported one civilian fatality and five injuries, including an 86-year-old woman.
Black Sea and energy infrastructure targeted
Further south, drone strikes targeted the port city of Odessa and neighboring Chornomorsk. Odessa Regional Military Administration Head Oleg Kiper reported that an explosion ignited a fire in an uninhabited building, leaving a 41-year-old man wounded by shrapnel.
In Chornomorsk, the bombardment caused severe structural damage to residential homes, a gas pipeline, commercial trucks, and a church property. In the Kherson region, Russian tactical strikes wounded 14 civilians while heavily damaging eight apartment blocks, 15 private homes, a water tower, and a mobile network tower.
State nuclear operator Energoatom reported that a drone struck a spent nuclear fuel storage site at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The container reception facility sustained partial structural damage, though officials confirmed no spent fuel was present in that specific section. Emergency teams contained a 40-square-meter fire rapidly, ensuring zero staff casualties and stable local radiation levels.
Humanitarian corridor vessels struck
In the Black Sea, Russian forces targeted two Ukrainian maritime search and rescue vessels operating within the humanitarian shipping lane. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba condemned the attack on the humanitarian mission, noting that naval units were executing emergency evacuations for the wounded crew members.
"The enemy struck two boats of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, which were performing a humanitarian mission within the Ukrainian maritime corridor. Unfortunately, there are wounded. Evacuation is underway with boats of the Ukrainian Navy," Kuleba stated. The Ukrainian Navy later verified the incident, calling the strike a flagrant violation of international law.
Military analysts noted a distinct tactical shift leading up to this assault. Ukrainian defense expert Serghei Beskrestnov reported that since early June, Russia has systematically intensified its strikes on critical transit routes connecting Kharkiv and Sumy, focusing heavily on logistics lines near the border town of Bohoduhiv.
