Eugen Tomac pledges to advance Moldova’s EU integration

Eugen Tomac, Romania's Prime Minister-designate, recently gave his first interview in this new role. If confirmed as the Government leader in Bucharest, he outlined key objectives, including unifying the educational curriculum and adjusting legislation to ensure that Romanian and Moldovan media have free access to both markets.

In an interview on the evening of May 8 with Antena 3 CNN, Eugen Tomac outlined three key priorities related to the Republic of Moldova that he plans to focus on if he secures a vote of confidence in the Romanian Parliament.

“The first action will be to create similar legislation so that all media entities in Romania have access to the media market in the Republic of Moldova, and vice versa,” Tomac stated.

His second priority is to align educational standards.

"On the educational front, I believe there’s no reason we couldn’t establish a common curriculum between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Although we are two independent states, the same people inhabit our territories. We must have the courage to build bridges for future generations by having joint competitions, studying the same subjects, and bringing our education systems closer together,” the designated prime minister said.

Additionally, he suggested enhancing partnerships in sports, stating, “Let’s promote sports activities, and perhaps even organize a joint cup for Romania and the Republic of Moldova.”

The third strategic objective is to provide direct support to Chișinău in its accession process to the European Union.

“It is extremely important to me to bring the Republic of Moldova as close as possible to the European Union,” the politician concluded.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has appointed MEP Eugen Tomac as Romania’s new prime minister, announcing the decision at a press conference on June 4.

According to the Romanian Constitution, the prime minister-designate has ten days to draft a government program and compile a list of ministers. At the end of this period, a vote of confidence is held in Parliament, where the prime minister-designate must secure at least 233 votes in order to be sworn in.

On Monday, June 8, Eugen Tomac began negotiations with the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union (USR), and the Social Democratic Party (PSD). The series of consultations continues today, June 9, involving the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), the National Minorities Group, representatives of United for Romania, and members from PACE.

Romania has been without a fully empowered government for nearly a month, following the dismissal of Ilie Bolojan on May 5, which occurred after a motion of censure initiated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR).

Eugen Tomac has been the president of the Popular Movement Party since 2022. His political career has focused on issues affecting Romanians in the diaspora and the relationship with the Republic of Moldova.

Tomac's institutional journey began in 2006 when he was appointed as an advisor in the Presidential Administration under President Traian Băsescu. Between 2009 and 2012, he served as Secretary of State at the Department for Romanians Abroad. In 2012, he resigned to enter Parliament, and since 2019, he has been a Member of the European Parliament. In October 2025, Nicușor Dan appointed him as an honorary advisor for relations with Romanians abroad.
