Moldova wins four medals at European Physics Olympiad in Sweden

The Olympic team from the Republic of Moldova achieved remarkable success at the European Physics Olympiad held from June 12 to 16, 2026, in Gothenburg, Sweden. The team won a total of four medals: one gold, two silver, and one bronze. This impressive performance was accomplished by four students from Chisinau, competing against approximately 200 participants from 43 countries, as reported by the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC).
The gold medal at the 10th edition of the European Physics Olympiad was awarded to Alex Secrieru, a student at the “Orizont” Theoretical Lyceum in Chisinau. Two silver medals were claimed by Darius Graur and Victor Sandu, also students at the same educational institution. The bronze medal was won by Daniel Mardari, a student at the “Aristotel” Theoretical Lyceum in the capital.
The Republic of Moldova's national team was represented by five students and a coordinating teacher. The team included Alex Secrieru and Victor Sandu, both in the 11th grade at the “Orizont” Theoretical Lyceum in Durleşti; Darius Graur, a 12th grader at the same school; Daniel Mardari, a 12th grader at the “Aristotel” Theoretical Lyceum; and Alexandru Macovei, a 12th grader at the “Prometeu-Prim” Creativity and Invention Lyceum in Chisinau.
Serghei Bîzgan, a doctor of physical sciences at the Institute of Applied Physics of the State University of Moldova, served as the team leader.
The relevant ministry and the National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation congratulated the award-winning students as well as those who contributed to their preparation.
"The Ministry of Education and Research and the National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation express their appreciation to the members of the Republican Olympic Council in Physics for the remarkable effort and dedication shown in preparing the national Olympic team," stated the MEC press release.
The authorities also extended "sincere congratulations to the award-winning students, teachers, and parents who supported them along the way."
