Moldova limits heavy truck traffic amid extreme heat

Moldova will temporarily restrict the movement of heavy goods vehicles with a maximum authorised weight exceeding 12 tonnes on national roads from 28 June to 1 July, amid yellow, orange and red heat alerts, the National Roads Administration (AND) announced.

Under a joint order issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the restrictions apply between 10:00 and 20:00 whenever orange or red heat alerts are in force.

The measure does not apply to passenger transport, perishable goods, medical equipment, emergency response vehicles, livestock transport, fuel distribution or other categories specifically exempted under the order.

According to the National Roads Administration, the restrictions are intended to protect road infrastructure from damage caused by extreme temperatures. During heatwaves, asphalt pavements soften and lose part of their load-bearing capacity, increasing the risk that heavy vehicles will cause permanent deformation, including rutting and other damage that can compromise road safety and lead to costly repairs.
