Igor Grosu: EU progress needs concrete recognition

The President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, supports a merit-based process for European Union accession, emphasising that candidate countries that implement necessary reforms should be acknowledged for their progress in integration negotiations.
The position was ruled by the Speaker of Parliament from Chișinău at the inaugural Conference of the Speakers of Parliaments from candidate countries seeking EU accession, which took place on Tuesday, July 7, in Belgrade.
"The candidate countries for the European Union may have different paths, but they share the same direction: a more united, democratic, and safer Europe. The accession process must be based on merit. Each country must do its homework. The Republic of Moldova understands its goals, and we will continue to work to ensure that this European path is taken seriously, resulting in tangible benefits for our citizens," declared Igor Grosu.
The inaugural conference gathered the Speakers of Parliaments from candidate countries to discuss common challenges and opportunities in the European integration process, share best practices, and develop joint initiatives.
Additionally, the participants aim to establish a permanent platform for dialogue, coordination, and mutual support at the parliamentary level. The main theme of the meeting is "European Integration in a changing geopolitical context" highlighting the role of the parliaments of candidate states in advancing their accession to the European Union.
This event was organized at the initiative of Ana Brnabić, the President of the National Assembly of Serbia, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the President of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The Speaker of the Parliament from Chișinău also held bilateral meetings with both leaders on the sidelines of the conference.
The discussions focused on strengthening relations between the parliaments of the three countries, supporting Ukraine, and promoting the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova and Serbia.
