Kyiv targets Russian space plant Progress and Savasleika base
Ukrainian forces launched long-range missile and drone strikes targeting key Russian defense, aerospace, and energy infrastructure hundreds of kilometers behind the border.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian-developed "Flamingo" missiles struck the Progress Rocket Space Centre in Samara, approximately 900 kilometers from Ukraine. He added that long-range strikes also targeted the Savasleika military airfield in the Nizhny Novgorod region, located around 700 kilometers from the border.
Strategic Impact on Aerospace and Energy
The Progress facility in Samara, a key subsidiary of Russia's Roscosmos state corporation, manufactures Soyuz-2 launch vehicles. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, these rockets deploy military reconnaissance satellites and the Rassvet constellation, Russia's domestic equivalent to Starlink.
Open-source intelligence analysts reported that the Samara strike ignited a fire at either the Progress facility or the adjacent AviaKor aviation plant. Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishev confirmed a missile strike on an industrial enterprise, reporting two injuries while withholding the specific company name.
Simultaneous strikes on military airfield and fuel terminal
The target at Savasleika airfield hosts MiG-31 aircraft equipped to carry Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. Russian authorities have not commented on the situation at the air base.
Additionally, Ukrainian forces confirmed a strike on August 14 against a NOVATEK oil and energy facility in the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, causing reported damage to oil infrastructure.
