Moldova unveils unseen masterpieces from Soviet era
A newly opened exhibition in Chișinău brings forgotten masterworks back into the public eye after decades in archival storage. Hosted at the Constantin Brâncuși Gallery, "The Unknown Works of Bessarabian Masters" showcases restored paintings, graphics, sculptures, and decorative art from the collection of the Union of Visual Artists.
The initiative sheds light on how artists maintained their creative sovereignty behind closed studio doors despite strict Soviet ideological censorship.
A three-year restoration effort
The exhibition represents the culmination of a rigorous three-year conservation and research campaign funded by the Ministry of Culture. Specialists restored rare early creations by prominent figures, including Mihai Grecu, Valentina Rusu Ciobanu, Ada Zevin, Glebus Sainciuc, Eleonora Romanescu, Elena Bontea, Alexandru Climașevschi, Ana Baranovici, and Ion Jumati.
"These artists shaped and developed our national school of painting through works found nowhere else," said Florina Breazu, president of the Union of Visual Artists. "Our core mission is to share their heritage and demonstrate that artistic freedom endured inside their workshops."
Unlocking unexplored archival heritage
Beyond surface cleaning, restorers carried out structural interventions to safeguard the collection, replacing damaged stretcher bars and decaying frames.
"While we have held smaller presentations in the past, restoring these pieces to this standard is a true milestone," noted visual artist Dumitru Bolboceanu. He emphasized that these unique early works still require systematic cataloguing and academic study across distinct periods and media.
Academic value and public engagement
Art historians regard the showcase as an essential educational resource for emerging creators, university students, and the wider public.
"This exhibition is the direct result of in-depth research, presenting works that were previously inaccessible," stated Natalia Procop, PhD in Art Studies.
The project will conclude with the release of a comprehensive print catalogue documenting every restored artwork in the collection.
