Moldova struggles with 30,000 tons of textile waste

Moldova generates roughly 30,000 tons of textile waste annually, yet only about 100 tons are recycled. Consequently, over 99 percent reaches landfills, severely increasing pressure on the local environment.

Environmental impact

According to the Environment Ministry, each citizen generates between 12 and 13 kilograms of textile waste yearly. Most of these garments end up in waste dumps, where synthetic fibers and chemical compounds decompose over time.

Textile waste creates long-lasting environmental hazards. Experts emphasize that recycling methods must reduce waste volume without generating additional ecological damage.

“We must understand that many textiles contain numerous chemical elements, being artificial. Accordingly, we need to find a recycling solution that does not compromise environmental quality,” said Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov, executive director of the EcoContact Association.

Implementing clear targets for textile waste is essential, given the high number of domestic and export-oriented textile manufacturers operating in Moldova.

Social solidarity

Beyond recycling, reusing and donating clothes in good condition reduces landfill pressure while supporting vulnerable populations. The "Banca de haine" (Clothing Bank) initiative is one such effort, distributing public donations to families in need.

Last year, more than 60 tons of goods were collected through specialized donation boxes in Chisinau.

“It is a form of solidarity that begins in Chisinau and continues through social wardrobes or distribution points, where volunteers sort and offer these donations,” said Igor Belei, executive director of the Diaconia Social Mission.

To streamline the process, organizers urge donors to ensure clothes are clean, packed properly, and labeled by age category or item type. This significantly aids volunteers in distributing the goods effectively to local communities.
