Siegfried Mureșan: We continue to convince the partners in Vienna not to oppose Romania's accession to Schengen

MEP Siegfried Mureșan said in an interview for TVR that Romania was open and worked closely with the European institutions to get the vote on the country's accession to Schengen, and continues to convince the partners in Vienna not to oppose this important decision for European Union too.

"We are using all communication channels to convince our partners in Austria that Romania meets all the conditions, which has been repeatedly confirmed by the European Commission. To discuss problems specific to Austria, that Austria also has reservations that have nothing to do with Romania. They have an immigration crisis, they have a large number of refugees, but who do not come from Romania, they do not come through Romania, so it would be incorrect for our accession to the Schengen Area to suffer as a result of the internal situation. We are willing to listen to them, we are willing to find solutions together with them, together with the European Commission, and for them to be helped in the migration crisis, but not to oppose our accession to Schengen, which we deserve", said MEP Siegfried Muresan. Prime Minister of Romania Nicolae Ciuca had a telephone conversation with the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, last night. Nicolae Ciucă informed Karl Nehammer about maintaining Romania's position to request a vote at Thursday's meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council for the country's accession to Schengen, despite Austria's opposition. Also, he recalled that all other member states currently support Romania's accession. A decision on the extension of the Schengen area can be taken with the unanimity of the member states that are part of the free movement area.
