Moldovan authorities intensify biosecurity measures as several disease hotspots emerge
The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) has announced an escalation in monitoring and intervention protocols following the detection of several animal disease outbreaks across the Republic of Moldova since early February.
In the Hîncești district, veterinary officials confirmed two distinct outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) among domestic pigs. The cases were identified in the localities of Fîrlădeni and Lăpușna, triggering immediate quarantine measures.
Simultaneously, Avian Influenza has been detected in wildlife reservoirs in Pohorniceni, Orhei district. Experts warn of rapid inter-species transmission and have enforced strict movement controls to prevent the virus from spreading to commercial poultry farms.
Public health concerns have also risen following three confirmed Rabies cases. Two instances were reported in cattle in Soltănești (Nisporeni), while a third was confirmed in a domestic dog in Răcăria (Rîșcani).
As Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease, ANSA urges maximum caution. In the event of an animal bite or exposure to saliva, citizens must immediately sanitize the wound with soap and water and seek urgent medical attention.
Despite these challenges, ANSA reports significant progress in containment. Three previous African Swine Fever hotspots have been successfully eradicated, while two others are in the final stages of suppression, demonstrating the efficacy of current biosecurity interventions.
