Moldova completes natural gas market liberalization for major users

Almost all large-scale natural gas consumers in Moldova have transitioned to the free market ahead of a key regulatory deadline, according to the Ministry of Energy.
Data released by the ministry shows that 193 out of 203 companies consuming more than 100,000 m3 annually have finalised their administrative transfer. These companies represent approximately 95% of large consumers and account for 99% of the gas volume in the newly liberalised sector.
The remaining ten companies have opted to disconnect their consumption sites temporarily. These businesses typically operate on a seasonal basis and are expected to contract gas on the free market later this year.
The transition marks the final step in liberalising the energy sector for major users, completed just one day before the official deadline. The ministry noted that all large industrial and commercial consumers have now fulfilled the necessary formalities to exit the regulated market.
This reform is a strategic move to increase competitiveness and energy security in the Republic of Moldova. By allowing companies to negotiate prices and delivery terms directly with authorised suppliers, the government aims to foster competition.
The shift is part of Moldova’s broader commitment to align its domestic legislation with European Union standards. Authorities believe the move will lead to more affordable prices and a more resilient energy infrastructure.
